An acid wash is done on an empty pool, by hand, one section at a time.
Plaster is porous. Over enough years, mineral from our hard water and organic staining from algae work into the surface, and no amount of shocking the water brings the colour back. The pool ends up looking dirty even on the day after it has been cleaned, which is maddening for the owner.
An acid wash strips the stained top skin of the plaster off. We drain the pool, work the surface in sections so nothing dries or burns, neutralise the waste, then refill and balance it. It is a big job that we only recommend when it is actually the right one.

Acid Wash Questions Worth Asking
When the plaster has gone grey, mottled or stained in a way that brushing and chlorine will not shift. Usually that is years of mineral and organic staining sitting in the surface. If the water is just cloudy or green, that is a different job and far cheaper.
