What Each Job Actually Does

A drain and clean is exactly what it sounds like: the old water goes, the empty shell gets scrubbed while it is accessible, and fresh water goes back in. Nothing is removed from the plaster itself.

An acid wash includes all of that and adds a chemical treatment that dissolves a thin layer off the plaster surface, taking the embedded staining with it. That is what makes it effective, and it is also why it cannot be repeated indefinitely.

Drain and clean

New water, scrubbed surfaces. Nothing removed from the plaster. Repeatable as often as needed.

Acid wash

New water plus a layer of plaster taken off with the stain. A handful of times over a pool's life.

How to Tell Which One You Need

Look at a clean, dry section of the plaster rather than at the water. If the surface underneath is a decent colour and the problem is that chemicals stopped working, your issue is water age and a drain will fix it. If the plaster itself is grey, mottled or patchy in a way that scrubbing does not touch, the stain is in the surface and only a wash reaches it.

Your Plaster Has a Budget

This is the part that gets left out of most conversations. Every acid wash consumes some of the plaster you have, and older Glendale pools have often had two or three over the decades. Once the surface is thin, another wash buys you a season and costs you years.

That is why we check before recommending one. If the plaster cannot afford it, coating or resurfacing is the honest answer, and we would rather say so than take the easier sale.

Doing It Once, Properly

Both jobs require an empty pool, which is the expensive and disruptive part. If your pool needs tile work below the waterline, a coating, or an equipment repair that is easier with the water out, all of it belongs in the same window. Draining twice in a year is the most avoidable cost in pool ownership.
